I hurt my other knee the same way last year, so I found myself stuck with two bum knees. I'd been using ace bandages and knee sleeves for support and compression and they were painful and uncomfortable.
I bought the hinged braces for walking and athletics and got these as a more comfortable option for standing when I wasn't doing physical activities. I had been hesitant to try these because it's a sleeve that is not adjustable, but I was pleasantly surprised! They are like a little bit of heaven! The metal side bars were a pleasant surprise and are SO comfortable and SO supportive! The pain was gone just like that! I can stand and prepare food now and wait in line at stores without discomfort.
I don't like anything too tight and compression only adds to my pain. So I ordered one size larger than the chart recommended and I'm glad I did. They are snug enough and I'm sure they will shrink up a bit when I wash them. The bar on the side provides all the support.
One more great thing about these that I didn't expect is that they can be worn in the ocean and pool! I was reading the care instructions and it said to just wash them out in plain water and hang them to dry after swimming. Getting down to the pool or ocean and maneuvering into the water is a challenge with knee pain, especially on a sandy beach. So I can't wait to try them out!
