The Sports Medicine Handbook for Parents & Coaches Review

The Sports Medicine Handbook for Parents and Coaches
Average Reviews:

The author wrote this book in layman's terms. I didn't have to go to a medical dictionary on every page!! I appreciated the way the author broke down the medical problems by sport. I found the tips to parents a good reminder to me about putting sports in the proper perspective.

From five-year-olds playing T-ball to teenagers showing off their inline skating skills, kids love participating in sports. Their parents, who often know little about their child's chosen sport, assume the roles of cheerleader, coach, or, when injuries occur, trainer. For these parent-coaches, here is a comprehensive, illustrated guide to preventing and treating sports-related injuries written by a family physician certified in sports medicine. This title explains the physical and psychological readiness of children for certain sports at different ages. It identifies injuries by the part of the body. It lists sport-specific injuries, from baseball through wrestling. It emphasizes preventing injuries and illness. It contains a glossary of basic medical terms. It includes illustrations of injuries and preventive exercises. Whether their kids are avid or occasional athletes, this handy reference will increase parents' ability to deal with minor injuries and to identify potentially more serious problems that require professional attention.

Relax and Renew: Restful Yoga for Stressful Times Review

Relax and Renew: Restful Yoga for Stressful Times

This book is all about letting go by doing nothing purposefully. Judith Lasater, a very experienced Iyengar yoga teacher, shows the reader in words and pictures how to use everyday props (e.g., blankets, pillows, walls and floors) to travel the highway to the state of relaxation. I had the opportunity to practice restorative yoga with Ms. Lasater in Montana about two years ago and I can attest to the fact this yoga works to relax both the mental and physical muscles in the body if practiced regularly. Since most people can't go off to Montana to practice yoga, this book is the next best thing to being there.

Athletic Body in Balance Review

Athletic Body in Balance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This should be required reading for athletes as well as coaches. The author does an excellent job in defining the "weakest link" as a cause of injury or tissue failure, and distinguishing between the too-often blamed "over-training" and the real culprit, improper training. Stability is emphasized, as it should be, as the basis for effective movement. (As my Burmese boxing coach once told me, it does no good to launch a rocket from a bamboo pad.) Other good points of emphasis, among many, are the need to relax to maintain fluidity with speed, and to "be quick but don't forget to stick." Again, in boxing we were always told to stick and move, but too often the person advising this had no idea of how to go about it, let alone teach someone else to do it. Gray Cook does. Throughout the book, his prose is effective, his explanations are clear and concise, and his recommended goals are accompanied by explicit step-by-step instructions to achieve them. For poviding the reader an understanding of athletic movement and training and actual how-to for practice and execution, this book tops my list.

Great athletes make difficult moves look effortless with a combination of skill, strength, and balance. Traditional conditioning builds a fitness base, but modern sports training takes into account athletic movement patterns. Athletic Body in Balance is the first guide of its kind to show you how to train for smooth, fluid movement and prevent muscle imbalances, mobility restrictions, stability problems, and injuries.

Physical therapist and sports conditioning expert Gray Cook has proven the effectiveness of his approach through the performances of athletes in the NFL, NBA, NHL, WNBA, and Reebok® University's sports training system. Cook's methods will help you identify functional weaknesses; correct imbalances; explore your potential; and refine sport-specific movement skills such as jumping, kicking, cutting, and turning. You will see where conditioning is breaking down and how to get your body back on track.

Whereas other books concentrate on maximizing your strengths, Athletic Body in Balance focuses on exposing and overcoming your weaknesses to form a foundation for long-term training gains. Learn how to maintain what you gain and build on your improvements. Make this comprehensive assessment tool your training guide. Prepare and repair your body for ultimate athletic performance with Athletic Body in Balance.

Relax into Stretch : Instant Flexibility Through Mastering Muscle Tension Review

Relax into Stretch : Instant Flexibility Through Mastering Muscle Tension
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I almost didn't buy this book because some of the reviews are so negative...but I'm glad I did anyway. A few points:
1. This method absolutely works...I say this after studying karate for 4 years (hundreds of kicks, stretching that included pouring water on the floor and having someone push down on your back, staying in stretched positions for up to an hour, etc..) yoga, stretch machines, standard stretch routines. Through all this, my stretch increased very little. I couldn't even sit on the floor with crossed legs without discomfort. My karate instructor used to say I had the flexibility of a rock. Pavel's method works. Get the book! The concepts are simple, but revolutionary. A few more points:
2. There is enough information and stretching routines in the book to last for years. I don't understand the reviews that say there is not enough info in the book, too many pictures, etc...I appreciated the fact that I could quickly go throught the book and get right into the stretching.
3. There is another reviewer who outlines all of the potentially harmful stretches, based on his assessment as a doctor. However, all of the stretches he talks about are in the advanced stretching section of the book; they are extreme exercises, that Pavel clearly states are not for beginners.
4. Appearances can be deceiving...for example I was experiencing slight lower back pain from one routine and then I went back and read how to do the exercise, and realized I was overstretching, not controlling my breathing and tension as described in the book. In spite of the clear, "simple" format of the book, it is rich in information, that must be read carefully.
5. One last point: this book is for those who need to get to the next level. (I can't believe someone recommended Anderson's "granny" stretch book over this one; give me a break) Whether to reach top levels of fitness, martial arts study, rock climbing, etc...I'm thinking of someone who is into total fitness.)
On the other hand, it's also worth reading for the weekend athlete, only because the knowledge can help one prevent injuries and avoid harmful stretching methods.
Disclaimer: this is not a cheerleader review for Pavel. I have no connection with him whatsoever, just a very appreciative reader. Get the book!

This book is great because it has information about fitness, stretching and strengthening, and sports medicine (injury prevention and treaatment) all in one volume. If you're a weekend warrior kind of athlete like me and have problems like tendinitis of the rotator cuff, plantar fascitis, tennis elbow, and so on, there is excellent information for dealing with it. I've been following the stretching and training recommendations, which have helped especially. Not to mention taking it easy and not overdoing it. I also like the side bars about Olympic athletes and how they train and how they deal with injuries. It's a great concept.

Bony-legs (Hello Reader Series) Review

Bony-legs (Hello Reader Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My youngest child has been afraid of the dark, strange noises, and the unknown for a long long time. At age 6 he discovered this book, and read it again and again.
This surprised me at first - it's a lot like Hansel and Gretel but for a small child, boy or girl, who is dealing with the scariness of the real world, Bony-Legs is a story that's scary but encouraging. What goes around will come around, is the message this book gives.
Sasha's aunt (her mother never would have done such a thing!) sends her to Bony-Leg's house in the woods to fetch a needle and thread.
Along the way, Sasha is kind to a hungry cat and a skinny dog, feeding them her lunch. She greases a creaking gate at the entrance to Bony-Leg's cottage.
"Poor gate," said Sasha, "You need some grease."
Once she gets to Bony-Leg's, she's locked in the bathroom, told to get nice and clean so Bony-Legs can eat her up. The cat, the dog she fed on her way to Bony-Leg's give her a mirror, a wooden comb and let her escape without a mew or a bark. The kindly oiled gate lets her out without a squeak.
With the help of these others, and the use of her own cleverness in figuring out how to use the mirror and the comb, Sasha escapes. And Bony-Legs - well, you'll have to read the story to find out all the details!
An enjoyable, short read filled with color pictures and a kind child's cleverness.

The Good Old Days, very funny
This book will be enjoyed by anyone that lived in small town America during the 30's, 40's, 50's, and the early 60's. It lets your mind wonder back in time when life was much simpler. Those were the days when children made up their own entertainment, which like Joe Boy ended up being a lot of adventures. I will definitely put Joe Boy on my shopping list for gifts to buy for anyone growing up during this time period

The Neurological Assessment of the Preterm & Full-Term Newborn Infant Review

The Neurological Assessment of the Preterm and Full-Term Newborn Infant
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although the intended audience for this book includes physicians and neuropsychologists, I found it quite readable and useful. In addition, it is practical and well organized. I found the illustrations to be particularly helpful.
One serious problem, the authors did not include an index. This is not a book that one reads from cover to cover in a single sitting. It is more of a reference book that a reader will seek out in order to find specific information. Without an index, the book is cumbersome - almost bordering on useless.

This is the second edition of the manual describing this popular and practical tool for the clinical neurological examination of the newborn. In addition to a number of developments on the original scheme in the light of clinical and research experience, the new manual also facilitates the recording and performance of the examination by providing clear information on its administration aided by illustrative diagrams. New sections include a simplified version of the examination suited to inexperienced staff, applicable both for screening and for use in developing countries; a revised proforma that may be used for the follow-up of infants beyond the neonatal period; and a new section describing clinical patterns in newborns with brain lesions and their correlation with imaging and neurological findings. Scoring tables are included in the back of the book.

Medical Injuries in the Martial Arts Review

Medical Injuries in the Martial Arts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Medical Injuries in the Martial Arts. What could be more useful? Not this book. Have a muscle strain? A "...frequent complaint in the martial arts"? No problem! Just note:
**"The posterior muscle mass is more commonly traumatized, and in severe cases, may be indistinguishable from ligamentous sprain or fracture. Therefore a history of the injury mechanism often obtainable from the the instructor and careful neurologic and radiographic examination may be required..." **
I picked this page at random. Really.
Of course you could say: "Neck strain is a common, and it's difficult to tell how serious it may be. You may want to get an X-ray and tell the ER doctor exactly how it happened so he could rule out nerve damage." But hey, where's the fun in that?
Oh wait: this book is supposed to be for the layman, perhaps the Sensei, to be familiar with possible injuries and quickly refer to them and advice on what to do next. Most every injury listed, regardless of how minor, is recommended to visit a doctor, get expensive tests, and is treated as if it were a major event. Therefore, there is no need for this book, as its own advice is to throw it out and visit the E.R.
Can it be useful? Sure. If you can translate the above passage without hesitation, and can walk-back with common sense how serious an injury may or may not be, and distinguish it from the dozen similar injuries listed. But it's not a quick first-aid guide. Nor a doctor's guide. Nor a guide on how people may be seriously injured by karate moves, either to cause or prevent them. Not sure what they're aiming for.
Complete and accurate. Readable, not over long, thus 3-stars. But make your own choice about the practicality of this guide in your dojo library.

Essential Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Review

Essential Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

I purchased this book to help me & my son learn more about BJJ. It has met all my expectations. It covers the history of BJJ, the physical & psychological benefits of martial arts, the belt system, then gets into basic positions and techniques. There are more detailed texts out there, but I prefer this book's organization and brevity. I skimmed several books before deciding on this one and feel confident I made the right choice. Expert instruction is, of course, preferred but this book makes a great companion reference.
