Step-By-Step Tai Chi Review

Step-By-Step Tai Chi
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll be brief. This is a great introductory book for us Westerners. This is 99% physical, and 1% metaphysical. It contains nothing about Chi/Qi or Qi Gong, and the motions are not from any of the major styles. Rather, the book presents a sort of "beginer's" form called Small Circle form. The book is a methodical and organized introduction to Tai Chi movements. The things you will learn in this book through its fantastic illustrations and explinations will give you the foundation you will need to tackle a class/style. The best part of this book is the way it focuses on posture, breathing, and warming up. Its self paced, but is designed to be done slowly and practiced daily, but thats up to your goals. Worth every dime. Start here before you get too crazy on spending.

This book is extremely helpful for putting together a well thought out strenght program to prepare for triathlon season. Not only does it provide a list of discipline specific exercises, but it also helps with the number of reps and the proper amount of weight. The best part of the book is the distance specific workout plans.

Yoga Heals Your Back: 10-Minute Routines that End Back and Neck Pain Review

Yoga Heals Your Back: 10-Minute Routines that End Back and Neck Pain
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm an ex-Physiology Teaching Fellow with a strong background in yoga. I own and have reviewed many books and this particular volume has much to offer. One of the things I most like about it is that it is broken down into 10-25 minute routines that anyone can do. Also, the author who has excellent credentials has simplified routines and covers the use of props which can make it possible for older people or others with limitations to safely practice yoga.
This book is attractively illustrated, concise and can be something you implement right away. While I would have liked to see more detail on the correct performance of some of the poses, there is certainly enough to get you started. The routines are also complementary even though they are listed by body area. This makes sense because the whole body is one unit or system.

It can be very intimidating to start yoga on your own and to put together routines that make sense. It is also fairly easy to get hurt doing things wrong, but this book presents a sane and easy to follow approach. If you have a back problem, I would also pick up Back Care Basics: A Doctor's Gentle Yoga Program for Back and Neck Pain Relief. This is THE book on the subject as far as I'm concerned, but the level of detail is higher with less of a broad scope.
Also, if you are serious about doing all the poses correctly and want to get the most benefit from this book, then [[ASIN:1930485042 30 Essential Yoga Poses: For Beginning Students and Their Teachers] would give you more routines beyond this book and more importantly detailed instructions for all the poses including the ones that are used in the book that I am reviewing.
Although I am a fairly advanced yoga practitioner, I use this book regularly. If I had to reduce my review to two words it would be SIMPLE and EFFECTIVE. It has all meat, no fluff and no hype. In addition, the author has excellent credentials. She is the editor-and-chief of FIT and FIT YOGA magazines and has been studying yoga for over 20 years in a variety of traditions. She also studied with some of the top yoga masters and taught in a variety of settings including hospitals.
You can't go wrong with this book and it is reasonably priced. I believe it will also be helpful to those with back problems, but if that is your situation then I think the other book above that I mention is important to own as well. You can't afford to make mistakes with a delicate back. If you are reasonably healthy in this regard, then or are already familiar with yoga then maybe you can get away with just this ONE book.
I hope this review was helpful and you can see other yoga books I recommended on my profile as well as a listmania list on the topic. Good luck with your yoga and thanks for reading my review.

The New Yoga for People Over 50: A Comprehensive Guide for Midlife and Older Beginners Review

The New Yoga for People Over 50: A Comprehensive Guide for Midlife and Older Beginners
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My aunt (a flourishing over-50 yoga devotee) recently sent me (a very stiff 33-year old beginner) a copy of Suza Francina's marvelous book, The New Yoga for People Over 50. I previously acquired Mira Mehta's authoritative How to Use Yoga, which I find quite instructive and aspire to begin using (yoga isn't as easy as it looks, folks!). However, I don't believe anything could inspire me as much as seeing and reading the testimonials of so many over-50 yoga practitioners in Francina's book; their execution of some of the more challenging postures is absolutely mind-altering!
Francina's book and her work in general are truly a blessing. Bolstered by the knowledge The New Yoga for People Over 50 has given me I have begun "converting" my mother, who frequents the weight machines at the gym. She is a fit and vibrant 54-year old, but her hectic lifestyle, which includes a six-day work week (she owns a business) needs the addition of yoga to ensure her health and longevity.
This book is a wonderful, invaluable tool for everyone, regardless of age. I hope to catch up with Francina's octogenarian students within a few years! With Francina and her students as examples, I expect I will do just that - and anyone who reads this book will be motivated to set a similar goal: feel better and live longer with yoga!

Awareness Through Movement: Easy-to-Do Health Exercises to Improve Your Posture, Vision, Imagination, and Personal Awareness Review

Awareness Through Movement: Easy-to-Do Health Exercises to Improve Your Posture, Vision, Imagination, and Personal Awareness
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first time I read this book, it was such a daunting task I put down and saved it for a time when my intelligence was ready to 'understand' the instructions. If you're the equivilent of a college freshman in the science of movement this book will probably be something you want to save for a more advanced place in your progression. Or read it and get what you can...planning to come back to it over and over. If I hadn't seen and tried the method via videotapes and then in an actual seminar I probably wouldn't have given the book a chance at all.
That choice, however, would have been a huge mistake.
This book offers a series of "lessons" that take the human body through movements most children could do easily but had been pushed out of my movement repertoire. These are also movements most people, including my extremely strong and lean 30 year old daughter(who's a personal trainer I might add), cannot do with ease. The movement patterns provided in the book help me rollerblade without fear (well, a reasonable level of fear!) and increase the likelihood that I'll still be able to chase men when I'm old enough to know better but still too young--what's 95 anyway?-- to care. On a more serious side these strengths will be absolutely crucial if we want to be able to get into a shower or go to the restroom alone when we get older.
I've been a runner and fitness specialist for a LONG time and have worked from just about every angle in the fitness field that exists, from aerobic instruction to power lifting to yoga and the Awareness Through Movement theory was alien to anything I'd learned in the traditional "western" pursuit of fitness.

Instruction like this was not in any of my personal training courses. Though certified in anatomy and strength training for several years, this just didn't even appear on my fitness 'radar'. I wasn't used to working that hard for information. I wanted cut and dried instructions with pictures to boot. It was normal to use traditional exercise methods because they aren't very complex, are easy to teach and mistakes are fairly easy to see and correct.
Books that instruct bench presses, abdominal crunches, and squats also are easy to read and follow; unfortunately they miss the subtlties necessary to truly powerful human movement. No good athlete depends on exercises like those alone. That's where this book has helped. It has required some intense think and move sessions but all these movement lessons yield surprising results if you have the patience to stick with them. One note: you must have the patience of a baby learning to walk.
I read Feldenkrais' other books which actually gave Awareness Through Movement context and made it easier with which to work . Feldenkrais was a judo master as well as one of the earliest developers of cybernetic science and all of this shows in his book but it also means the book isn't light reading. Learning to do the method from written text will be as difficult as learning the basics of one of the martial arts.
I agree that the photos of wooden models are difficult to use, front and back are almost impossible to discern (I did some creative artwork..noses, ears, etc. once I figured out where they needed to be) and might make it difficult to understand the movement clearly. There is also no index or reference table which is a little frustrating at times.
Despite these drawbacks I wouldn't give the book to a family member unless I knew a replacement would be easy to find!

Ellie Herman's Pilates Workbook on the Ball was such a good book that I had to get this book of hers too. I am very pleased with the exercises, and like having now the variety of Pilates exercises on the big ball (from the other book) as well as Pilates on the roller, magic circle, and thera-band, from this book. Everything is well laid out and explained. I highly recommend this book.

Ultimate Warrior Workouts (Training for Warriors): Fitness Secrets of the Martial Arts Review

Ultimate Warrior Workouts (Training for Warriors): Fitness Secrets of the Martial Arts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is probably deserving of a 5 star review but for me and what I was hoping for it lacks. I'll start with the positive stuff. As you probably know Mr Rooney spent two years travelling the world to what he considered the best martial arts gyms in the world could be and have been useful in a MMA context. You have know arguments from me here. He's definitely attended most of the gyms that I dream of attending. Kodokan, Fairtex Bangplee, University of Iowa just to name a few, giving the background on each. He has photos demonstrating the conditioning exercises used at these gyms by himself and by members of the gym. All good so far. He gives information on nutrition for a fighter and information on cardio training. He also refers back to his first book a lot which I don't have problem with considering what I paid for this book I would happily buy his first. I already use his dynamic work out from the first book which i got indirectly from my old muay thai coach (who happens to have a few world titles) and highly recommend it. And to top it off he gives you a six month program to follow to get you into peak condition for MMA. Excellent stuff. Also I like the quality of the book itself. Nice glossy pages.
Now for the bad stuff. I study sport exercise so my views are based on what I was hoping for in this book. Mr Rooney does not give how the exercises he has chosen are used by the respective gyms in the context of their programs. Say for example with the muay thai section he doesn't say when yodsanklai would use the chin up variations in his program i.e. If he has separate sessions for conditioning or he does them before or after pads, reps, what a sample template for training at the gym would be etc. Another gripe he doesn't break down the science of his program. I know for someone like him he shouldn't be giving everything away but this is what I'm interested in and its highly unlikely that I'm going to be able to get his Parisi Speed School gym to do an internship with him any time soon. I live in New Zealand and can only dream. And to be honest with a bit of research I'm sure it would be possible to work this out. Also highly doubt this book is targeted at the trainer as much as the fighter. Back to supertraining for me.
All these bad point aside this an excellent resource for those interested in the fitness aspect of MMA. A six month program from Mr Rooney is worth more than the price of this book, and the extra information on the various martial arts is a bonus.

Yoga for Wellness: Healing with the Timeless Teachings of Viniyoga Review

Yoga for Wellness: Healing with the Timeless Teachings of Viniyoga
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was fortunate to obtain an advance copy of this book at the recent SouthWest Yoga Conference. Over 100 copies sold out in 3 days. No wonder, for in a crowded field, this is a landmark book. Not only yoga therapy, but also for yoga practice in general. Based upon deep understanding of the principles of movement, breath and adaptation, many principles and illustrative examples of therapeutic yoga applications are presented for common aches and pains, chronic disease and emotional health. These sections are preceeded by short, relevant discussions of the anatomy and physiology involved. It is worthwhile to stress that the therapeutic applications are not isolated or stand alone examples but rather logically derive from the Viniyoga principles which are clearly, if succinctly presented in the first two chapters; Principles of Practice and Biomechanics of Movement. These explanations alone may be worth the price of the book for serious yoga students, for the Viniyoga principles are somewhat revolutionary from the perspective of many contemporary yoga practices in America. Yet, when well presented, they are eye opening, intuitive and persuasive, as I am sure many attendees of Gary's popular lecture "Reading the Body for Yoga Therapy" will attest.

Dynamic Figure Drawing Review

Dynamic Figure Drawing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Subtlety is certainly not the strong point of this book. If you want realistic figures, look elsewhere like the Barcsay anatomy book. DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING doesn't explore the nuances of quiet poses or the beauty in overweight, underweight, or aged figures.
But if you aspire to draw or paint powerful, idealistic, and expressionistic figures, combine the lessons of this book with drawing from athletic models. If you're into Michelangelo with his use of larger-than-life figures that use exaggerated poses and anatomy to convey strong emotion, you'll like this book.
After practicing the lessons inside the book, you'll be able to spot and draw them better when you draw from a model. Your powerful figures will have more authority to them. And with enough figure drawing under your belt, plus what you've learned from this book, you'll be able to draw figures out of your head in any position you want them in.
The Disney animated feature "Tarzan" was obviously inspired by Burne Hogarth's version of the comic strip "Tarzan." The animators learned many lessons from Hogarth, including foreshortening and dynamic poses and anatomy. I'll bet this book was an important reference to whoever worked on that film.

Strong Enough? Thoughts from Thirty Years of Barbell Training Review

Strong Enough Thoughts from Thirty Years of Barbell Training
Average Reviews:

This collection of advice, anecdotes, and opinions makes for a great read. I own "Starting Strength" as well, and make use of it frequently as a reference - quick checks to find form issues or clarifications. "Strong Enough?" is a different sort of book, one that is enjoyable to read cover-to-cover. There are still plenty of practical lifting tips, but they're gleaned as you go from the broader context.
If "Starting Strength" is the next best thing to having a lifting coach beside you in the gym, "Strong Enough?" is the next best thing to having a beer with him afterwards.

The Athlete's Guide to Yoga: An Integrated Approach to Strength, Flexibility, and Focus Review

The Athlete's Guide to Yoga: An Integrated Approach to Strength, Flexibility, and Focus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not only is this a perfect book for athletes, it is also perfect for non-athletes. It is an excellent introduction for those new to yoga, and would be a great new resource for yoga instructors. As a cyclist and a yoga teacher in training, I found this writing to be the most elegant and direct explanation of the broad principles of yoga of any book I've read. It introduces the concepts of yoga and then provides examples of how they are to be applied in the real world. Resources are provided for those who want further study.
Sage Rountree's introduction to yoga in the first part of the book is worth the price itself. For anyone curious about yoga, this explains everything needed to approach it safely and with confidence. For athletes, she specifically discusses how the different types of yoga can be appropriately incorporated into their training program. The middle of the book is dedicated to the poses, breathing and meditation. Each pose is illustrated and fully described as to how to safely get into the pose, along with modifications. Relaxation and breathing are well covered with an emphasis on how important they are to an athlete's recovery time. The last part of the book discusses how to use yoga within the cycles of a training plan and finishes with several sequences for specific needs, such as stretching, warming up and restorative poses. Many of these sequences are great for any busy person wanting to "sneak" in some yoga during their hectic day. This author seems to be one of the few who understands that many who are interested in yoga are also very busy.
This is just a wonderful book. I hope it gets the attention of a very broad audience because it has so much to offer. It has now become the first book I would recommend to anyone asking about yoga.

A Tooth from the Tiger's Mouth: How to Treat Your Injuries with Powerful Healing Secrets of the Great Chinese Warrior (Fireside Books (Fireside)) Review

A Tooth from the Tiger's Mouth: How to Treat Your Injuries with Powerful Healing Secrets of the Great Chinese Warrior (Fireside Books (Fireside))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First a disclaimer: I've been a student of Tom's for over 10 years, both as martial artist and a practitioner of Chinese medicine. (In fact, I became an acupuncturist partly as a result of having had my martial arts injuries sucessfully treated with Chinese medicine.) So, I am most definitely a biassed reviewer!
I'll focus on a small portion of the book, one which is of primary interest to martial artists: the use of herbal training formulas (Die Da formulas) to heal and prevent injuries:
A Tooth From the Tiger's Mouth includes in-depth discussion of the following external formulas:
A basic Die Da Jiu (trauma liniment) for acute injuries
A formula for Tendon Lotion for chronic injuries bothered by damp and cold
U-I Oil - a patent remedy
Chinese Massage Oil - a patent remedy
Black Ghost Oil - a patent remedy
San Huang San - a herbal poultice for acute injuries
Sinew-Bone Poultice - a herbal poultice for healing middle or late stage injuries
Wu Yang Pain Relieving Plaster - a patent remedy
Yunnan Paiyao Plaster - a patent remedy
701 Plaster - a patent remedy
Hua Tuo Anticontusion Rheumatism Plaster - a patent remedy
Gou Pi Plaster - a patent remedy
Tendon Relaxing Soak - an herbal soak
Warming Soak - an herbal soak
The following internal formulas are also discussed in detail:
Trauma pills - an herbal pill made with ground herbs and honey
Resinall K - a patent remedy made from an alchohol extract; similar to Qi Li San
Rib Fracture Formula
Bone Knitting Formula
Tonic formulas such as Ge Jie Da Bu Wan, etc.
Individual herbs for healing sinew and bone injuries
Nutritional and dietary supplements
Certainly there are many Die Da formulas available and several excellent books about Die Da formulae are available to the martial artist. However, Tom's book excells insofar as he provides very concise and accurate information about WHY and WHEN to use different Die Da formulas (based on Chinese medicine theory). Having taken many of Tom's "Kung Fu Traumatology" courses over the past ten years, I can definitively state that A Tooth From the Tiger's Mouth provides the very best, fundamental, and practical information available to the athlete and martial artist about treating sports and martial arts injuries with Chinese medicine. I remember hearing Tom talk about these formulas for the first time, making or buying them, and then trying them out on myself or on friends and training partners as we got injured during our training. The bottom line is - they work.
However, Tom's book is much more than a discussion of Die Da formulas. There are detailed chapters that describe the principles of Chinese sports medicine, injury prevention with respect to excercise, diet and health preservation, the various therapies of Chinese sports medicine, (including the management of cuts and lacerations, cupping and bleeding, acupressure, massage, and moxibustion), and the treatment of common sports injuries (over 30 are described). Moreover, the book is well-written, logical, and easy to follow. This is a gem of a book and would be welcome addition to any martial artist's book shelf. The fact that all of the therapies described in the book can be sucessfully applied to the treatment of sports-related injuries, makes it that more especially valuable.

Advances in Functional Training: Training Techniques for Coaches, Personal Trainers and Athletes Review

Advances in Functional Training: Training Techniques for Coaches, Personal Trainers and Athletes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're reading this review, you likely know what functional training is and probably know far more than I do about it. But for those who may not know, let me clarify.
At it's most basic, functional training is a classification of exercise which involves training the body for the activities performed in daily life.
So my interest in it is to make the second half of my life full of quality. I know that as we age we lose a tremendous amount of muscle, strength and power. To be able to lift large sacks of groceries and throw 50 pounds of dog food on your shoulder and take it to the basement without pain or effort, is functional to me. I'm not training for the NFL.
So, to a large extent, this book isn't written to me. In fact, the real audience for this book are coaches, personal trainers and athletes.
The author tells us, "Coaches need to move forward in their programming and use exercises that make sense and will actually reduce the potential of injury." That's the basis of the ideas in this book. Exercises that make sense and reduce the potential of injury.
ACE (American Council on Exercise) says, "At the extreme, some individuals believe that by mimicking the explosive, ballistic activities of high-level competitive athletes, they are training in a functional manner. All too often, however, such training programs greatly exceed the physiological capabilities of the average exerciser, which ultimately increases the possibility that an injury might occur. Most would agree that there is nothing functional about sustaining an injury due to improper training."
So the author, using many sources and resources, teaches the safe way to train for function. You won't find crunches or exercises that can be dangerous at most and ineffective at the least.
"The real key," says the author, "is for the athlete to possess a good ratio of pulling to pushing strength. This is best estimated by comparing an athlete's maximum number of pull-ups to his maximum bench press weight."
This is similar to the way yoga uses poses and counter-poses. In other words, if the front is not worked equal to the back, problems will crop up and injury can result. And when you work one area of the body, you need to do an equal amount of work to the opposite area of that muscle or muscle group.
The author tells us that pain in the knees is usually not a problem in the knees but the ankle or the hip. I found this valuable information as I always assumed that if you did knee exercises you would cure your knee problems. The truth is, according to the book, you only mask the symptoms. So, you have to exercise the area where the real problem exists if you want to cure the problem.
I was surprised to learn the author doesn't favor leg extensions in a functional training program. He recommends the slideboard leg curl variation, which is a classic yoga pose called the bridge. At least, it's similar.
Functional training trumps training for form or beauty --- unless that's what you're after. In truth, you won't look like Arnold Schwartznegger used to look unless you take steroids or have the right body type. And washboard abs are a dream for most people --- a dream that can't come true. You might have a flat stomach in your twenties. But that gives way to a more natural belly as you age. That doesn't mean it has to be a fat belly without a strong core, however. That's where functional training is so powerful.
According to the author, "The reality is, hypertrophy for most non-anabolic-using clients is very hard to come by. And one unfortunate problem with hypertrophy training is our concept of how to train for hypertrophy has also been heavily influenced by steroid users.
Hypertrophy may in fact be a function of diet and body type and really have very little to do with training style."
You'll learn a lot in this book. And, while it's written for the professional trainer and athlete, don't let that turn you off if you want to learn about training for function. I learned a lot from it and I'm not trainer or athlete. But I can put what I learned to use today. And so can you.
The book has a short section on terminology used in functional training. It has some suggested resources and an index. All that makes the book a high-quality product.
But, beyond that, there is not one typo, misspelling or grammar error. I say that because good editing is the exception today --- not the rule. Whenever I find a book that is error-free and edited perfectly, I have to mention it, just as I always mention horrible editing.
I highly recommend this well-written book to every coach, trainer and athlete and even to those like myself who train for the main event --- everyday living.
- Susanna K. Hutcheson

Complete Conditioning for Tennis (Complete Conditioning for Sports Series)

This book is REALLY comprehensive and covers every aspect of conditioning you can imagine. Major chapters include:
-warm-up and flexibility training (includes all the major stretches)
-agility and footwork (specific drills to improve your footwork)
-speed and quickness (more drills to increase your speediness)
-core training (a lot of tennis moves depend on a strong trunk)
-strength and power training (exercises to increase your upper and lower body strength)
-aerobic training (ways to increase your endurance)
Also included, a short section on injury prevention- only a page and a half on tennis elbow though (suggest Treat Your Own Tennis Elbow for more on that).
Just a ton of information here and I can't see anybody who plays tennis reading this book and not coming away with at least a few nuggets of wisdom. Get this book if you want to get in better physical shape to play tennis or if you're a coach and want more training tips and ideas.

Yoga Posture Adjustments and Assisting: An Insightful Guide for Yoga Teachers and Students Review

Yoga Posture Adjustments and Assisting: An Insightful Guide for Yoga Teachers and Students
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The only people buying this book ought to be certified yoga teachers, so the question is: does this $30 book add anything significant beyond what was covered in your training and continuing education?
I bought the book because I was a new teacher and was dealing with all the attending insecurities, and so this book was basically an expensive confidence boost--I was amazed that I knew just about everything worth knowing for my teaching in here. There were new and different assists I had never seen, but I just don't see the point for many of these. Example: why squat behind someone and have them sit on your knees or thighs in utkatasana and eagle? Instead of the student supporting their own weight and strengthening their quadriceps, you are doing the work for them, with the result that you build strength rather than the student. What's the point when these poses have a built-in way to ease into them for less strong students, i.e., not squatting so deeply?
Are you ever going to pull someone's arm forward while pressing back on their hip crease with your foot to get them to lengthen before dropping their hand into triangle? Fancy crawling underneath a student in camel and pushing up on their shoulder blades with your foot? Creative, sure. Useful? No.
The first section, "Getting started," is good, but it's only 14 pages, in a huge font with lots of white space and photos. She tells you to approach students directly as if opening the refrigerator, not awkwardly from odd angles, and to correct the most unsafe misalignments first. Fine advice, but I sure hope you learned that in your training.
What this book fails to cover is the practical side of diagnosing problems in poses and how to correct them. The problem is that trainees and the people in this book (all teachers at her studio) mostly know what they're doing. When I started teaching, however, I'd have people that had never done yoga before, and they'd do crazy, crazy stuff and their asanas and vinyasas would be almost unrecognizable.
I'd find myself thinking, "What the hell do I do with a downward dog that looks like THAT?" No help in this book. She doesn't give you any indication of how to correct the most unsafe misalignments, what they might be, who might benefit from a certain assist, etc. It would be helpful just to add, this is good for people with tight shoulders, or, don't bother doing this for someone whose shoulders are really tight--instead, do this.... And it would be really great if she had a photo of a completely messed up revolved triangle and showed you how to go about getting the student into a decent, safe form. But there's none of that kind of real-life practical advice here. There are, however, pointless random quotations from unknown people. "'For me yoga is the most satisfying type of exercise imaginable.' -- Amy X, Yoga Student."
If your training was really poor in this department then you might find enough here to justify the cost. And, for the record, this is the cheapest, ugliest, and most poorly produced $30 book I have ever seen; I can only imagine that this is because it is "published on-demand," which "takes advantage of internet marketing." Hmmm, so the publisher refused to mass-produce the book in the normal way, which yields higher quality at a greatly-reduced cost, so that they could save money on warehousing and charge far more for the book? Fantastic. It would have been a good book for $12.
