A book like this is hard to put into a neat heading. Nobody reads this kind of stuff for fun (unless you are a bit weird). Fear may well be the biggest incentive. Should I do this? Friends don't help. They tell single second hand misquotings and pander to the fear or to optimism, both misguided.
Reading a scientific accounting with historical annotation puts most readers to sleep and, frankly, misinforms by way of obfuscation and a tendency to avoid judgement. That makes unequal opposing arguments sound equal.
This is a good way to approach this subject for the to-be patient, vacillating limping gobbling pills person longing for their life back (remember those hikes through the mountains?), or loved one of someone at risk. People have questions. I can't imagine what relevant question isn't included (though even numbers always make me suspicious, why not 97 questions?). Simple, break down the bigger ones into smaller until a nice number rolls out.
But there is more value here. If you buy a set of Roland V-Drums, you get a pamphlet telling you how to care for them. There are instructions for cleaning cell phone screens in the packaging. Don't you think a collection of instructions for best care of a total joint replacement should be mandatory????? There are these hospital printed protocols written by lawyers mostly that tell you to do nothing or you die. Climb a stair, you die. Eat a bagel, you die. Typical don't stick this phone up your nose content. That is content to distance institutions from you. Junk.
The problem is, this book, by its very nature, will never be a Times best seller. So how do YOU know it exists? Yeah. Google or Bing, like that. However, I think a pile of these ought to be in the surgeon's waiting room. Or, 'Here Mrs. Dolor, read this. Then on our next visit, ask me the parts that most concern you.'
You see, today there is no hope that you will get the face time with that surgeon that this book - in a sense - gives you. Then you can use that smaller more precious time to get better attuned to those bits which seem most about you. That takes general information and layers on specific advice. Hard to beat.
If you are thinking about total joint replacement, read this. If your mother is thinking about it, especially if she is a meat head, you read it and pop questions on her as if they were your own. So many disasters can be avoided with education and a plan.
