Core Performance Endurance: A New Fitness and Nutrition Program That Revolutionizes the Way You Train for Endurance Sports Review

Core Performance Endurance: A New Fitness and Nutrition Program That Revolutionizes the Way You Train for Endurance Sports
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, the good. I've been a big fan of Core Performance workouts since reading the first book by Mark Verstegen. As I shifted toward more endurance sports like triathlon, I found the original book to be less helpful. Core Performance Endurance is the long-awaited combination of a core conditioning program with endurance training. On this most important point, I think Verstegen has again come through in a big way. Workouts emphasize flexibility, core strength, and injury prevention. Days are divided by emphasis on "strength", "power", "regeneration", and "rest". The idea is that, through this approach, an athlete will train efficiently and get the most results for the effort expended. What most people would call the "cardio" work is here referred to as "energy system development" or ESD. ESD work is done on most days, but it varies between slow days at less than race pace, relatively short intervals at race pace, and brief intervals at greater than race pace. The goal is to use the combination of approaches to improve the lactate threshold, the point where muscles start to "burn" and increase the level at which an athlete continuously perform without lactic acid build up. This flies in the face of "more is better" training, and it is consistent with the most recent advances in exercise physiology.
The Bad. If you are expecting a spoon-fed workout, you will be disappointed. The ESD workouts do not specify which sport is to be performed. That approach would work best for a pure runner or biker. For a multi-sport triathlete, it leaves a fair bit of the work in designing the program to the individual. For instance, should a swim be combined with a "power" day or a "strength" day? Should one alternate? How should "brick workouts" (two sports one after another, usually biking followed by running) be integrated? I like to take a hands-on approach to the details, but I can see how many might be put off by this. This book should properly be considered a foundation to an endurance exercise program, helping an athlete maximize their results and prevent injury. It should not be considered the whole program in itself.
The Ugly. An athlete progresses through stages (i.e. A, B, C) and levels (1, 2) that increase in length of time and difficulty. When ready to go to "level 3", you are instructed to go to the website, coreperformance.com. The problem? It's a site that REQUIRES A PAID MEMBERSHIP. I thought this was pretty sleazy. I don't think I would have bought the book if it had been marketed as "Two Thirds of Core Performance Endurance". When I first read the instruction to go to the website, I was pretty steamed. I was ready to dash off a 1-star review and trash the book. After I cooled down, I decided that, had there NOT been a 3rd level at all, I would have thought the workout was still pretty darn good. Judging the workout program by what is between the covers, I am reasonably happy. I decided to do my best to inform potential buyers and let them decide if it was a deal breaker or not. Consider getting the free trial offered at the site before buying the book, just to see if you think there is any value added for you.
So, for an excellent and innovative workout, I think Core Performance Endurance delivers. It would have been a much better book if it wasn't also a teaser for a subscription for an online exercise program run by the author. 4 stars.

This truly is a great little book. I've bought other books on medicine ball training but this one has the best photos (color) and simple, easy to follow directions. It seems to be written for both beginners and the more advanced, depending on the exercise chosen. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to add medicine ball training to their routine.

The medicine ball, a popular exercise tool in the 50's, 60's and 70's, is now making a comeback in the year 2001. The trend in fitness is toward core strength; strong abdominals, obliques and back muscles. The core group of muscles or "core" are often the initial source of physical movement. Therefore, having a strong core is crucial to both sport success for the athlete and functional movement for the average person. Because of it's size, weight, and easy handling ability, the medicine ball is an excellent exercise tool for working the core. The Great Medicine Ball Handbook shows the user a range of different exercises, along with proper instruction and safety concerns. Other sections include; rotator cuff exercises, stretching, a sample routine, and muscle anatomy diagrams. This "How to" book gives a complete body workout with start and finish photos and easy to follow, step-by-step, instructions.

Tae Kwon Do Review

Tae Kwon Do
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In an age where low quality has become the rule, Richard Chun's Book "Tae Kwon Do: The Korean Martial Art" is an exception. This was the first of the widely available large taekwondo books covering World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) style.
Author Richard Chun himself is originally of the Moo Duk Kwan, and was part of the contingent which split from Grandmaster Hwang Kee to remain with the Korea Taekwondo Federation (later the World Taekwondo Federation). In observing and considering the techniques in this book, those who have experienced other martial arts will be able to see the "old" style of Taekwondo, with the wider stances and solidity reminiscent of Japanese karate.
This volume contains the information required for the rank of Cho-Dan (first degree black belt) in most Taekwondo schools. Chapters cover history, stretching, strength exercises, stances, walking and moving, striking, vital points, hand, arm and head techniques, blocking, kicking techniques (including wheel kicks, jumping, and a technique I've never seen anywhere else--the handstand double foot kick!), advanced stances and combinations, sparring, self defense, breaking and special techniques, equipment in training, sport taekwondo (WTF style), and 9 forms: ki-cho 1, and the 8 Pal-Gwe.
The volume is hardcover, with cloth-covered boards and dust jacket. The photographs are crisp and clear, the paper is quality acid resistant, and the binding is (gasp) sewn. This book really is a work of art and a fine tribute to the practice of Taekwondo as a martial art.

Yoga For Children Review

Yoga For Children
Average Reviews:

I love this book. Let me say that I've probably owned this book 4 times, but it continually disappears and I have to buy it again. I am a pediatric occupational therapist, so I do a lot of Yoga with children with disabilities.
I've used this book with kids ages 3 through 18 that have varying levels of disability. The colorful pictures truly grab children's attention. The pictures are basic enough that children can look at the picture and attempt to imitate the pose. The yoga is 'watered down' enough that I can adapt these poses to most any child, not only those with special needs. My own daughter loves to look at this book with me!
You do not need a high knowledge base about Yoga to make this book effective and practical. I've purchased many other kids yoga activities, and this is the one that I use daily in my professional practice.

Yoga Teachers' Toolbox Review

I received my yoga teacher certification in '99 in Integrative Yoga Therapy with Joseph LePage. As part of our training, we are given a 300 page manual. While extremely comprehensive, it can be a bit daunting to use weekly in planning yoga classes. Joseph's Yoga Teachers' Toolbox is convenient, concise, yet thorough. Each "flashcard" explains which chakras are affected, how to teach the posture, excellent modifications with photos, and these flashcards are easily copied to be carried to class. I can't recommend this toolbox enough. No matter which teacher training you have completed, this will be an excellent resource for beginning and experienced teachers.

This is a fantastic weight and strength training book. I have never seen anything as functional as this. The books is well illustrated. It explains which exercises to use if you are trying to become (a)toned, (b) a body builder, (c) or an athlete. It contains suggested workouts to fit all target goals. Stretching, arms, legs, core and power/explosive exercises are all covered. My wife, son and I all use the book for different purposes. I use the book in advance of going to the gym by planning my work written work out. I photocopy the illustrations of the specific exercises I am going to perform and staple the illustrations to my plan so that I maintain perfect form while at the gym. The book has suggested exercises if you just want to exercise at home without weights as well. Trust me, this book is as good as it gets!!!!

Essential Yoga: An Illustrated Guide to Over 100 Yoga Poses and Meditations Review

Essential Yoga: An Illustrated Guide to Over 100 Yoga Poses and Meditations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Essential Yoga is an excellent guide to the novice student looking to expand their yoga practice. This book covers the Pranayama (Breathing Ch.1), Asanas (Warm ups Ch.2 Poses Ch.3), Dhyana (Meditations Ch.4) and Vinyasas (Flowing Poses Ch. 5) as well as Recommend Sequences (Ch. 6 & 7). It omits other stages of yoga such as Yamas and Niyamas, Pratyahara, Dharana, and Samadhi which would give the beginner a fuller picture of yoga. However, the authors state this book is for "someone who wants to do yoga and not just read about it".
Overall, I really enjoyed the graphics, general appearance, and construction of the book. This one seems to be well built in its lay-flat format which is good when you find yourself on the mat. The choice of yellow header may be hard for some readers since it does not reflect strongly against the white pages. The red text and graphics do appear well but the text might be small for some readers.
There are some very good breathing exercises (Ch.1) for more advance students of yoga. Usually, advance techniques like these are introduced to the novice student after becoming well versed in poses and basic breathing techniques.
The Asanas (Ch.2 & 3) have nice graphics of the postures with modifications. I liked the Sanskrit Names under the English Names of the poses. The benefits of each pose are presented in the beginning but no warnings which should have been included. The descriptions for getting into the posture are minimal which is nice since you want the basics to spend more time doing them, which is fine for the more advance yoga practioner but beginners might feel somewhat lost.
The Meditations (Ch. 4) were wonderful. The explanations were fantastic and the descriptions were very solid. It really allows the reader to visualize and affirm the thoughts during the meditation. I really enjoyed them.
The Vinyasas (Ch. 5) are described very well and the artwork was clean and crisp. It is nice to see a yoga book include more than the basic Sun Salutation. However, the poses didn't have their page numbers next to them to help the user reference them which seems odd because later in the book they are there for the Chapters Yoga Sessions and Recommended Sequences. No big deal, but the omissions itself is quirky.
The Yoga Sessions and Recommended Sequences (Ch. 6 & 7) are basically designed for students that allow them to work on specific conditions, goals, such as athletic improvements or time constraints. The poses do have corresponding page numbers for quick reference if you are rusty on certain poses. Beginners might be discouraged by this since they would be flipping back and forth too many times.
Beginners should always find a good teacher to start learning yoga. This allows the teacher to answer questions and make adjustments for them to get the maximum benefit from their yoga practice, then progress to books, videos, and retreats as ways to supplement their yoga practice.
Bottom line, this book would make a nice addition to your yoga library and give you some nice inspiration to help expand your yoga practice.

Maran Illustrated Weight Training Review

Maran Illustrated Weight Training
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over the years I have read a number of books on weight training. Most give you a routine, tell you how buff you are gonna look and toss in a picture or too. And they assume you know alot including proper form and what the heck the exercise is doing for your body.
Maran's Illustrated Weight Training is different. This book will give you a firm grounding in weight training. It covers everything so you will have a solid foundation to train for best results.
The book begins with something that is often missed in others - a picture of the human body with the muscles labeled. It is hard to work your "latissimus dorsi" or your "gluteu minimus" terms I have heard video instructors shout out, when you don't have a clue what they are. Marans gives you a clearly labeled front and rear view human body illustration.
Next the book makes the case for working out at home or at the gym. If you opt to set up a home gym you will learn what to look for in barbells, a bench, rack etc. If you opt to go to a gym you will learn what to look for before signing on the dotted line.
The book also covers gym etiquette (something you wish that sweaty man next to you who never wipes down the bench would read), proper clothing, and more.
Next comes the meat of the book. In great detail Marans describes how to work each part of your body. For your triceps for example Maran describes the bench dip, tricep kickback, triceps pushdown, barbell triceps press, dumbbell overhead extension, lying barbell extension and triceps extension machine. For each exercise you will learn what it does for your body, what muscles it works, and the do's and don'ts of performing it. Each excerise also includes lots of full color photographs.
Tons of exercises are covered for upper and lower body - from chest to back to buttocks to calves. There is also a section on using an exercise ball and using tubing.
I know a girl (ok it was me) who did ab work for several months with no results because she was doing the exercises wrong..too bad I didn't have this book then.
The book also includes information on how to design a weight routine, stretching (crucial for best results and to prevent injury), cardiovascular training and nutrition.
The softcover, oversized 300+ page book is beautifully laid out and designed. Full color photographs and easy to read text.
Super book for those starting out, on their way or the seasoned pro seeking that extra information. Maran scores a winner with this book!

Traditional Sun Style Taijiquan (Saddleback College-CPS7) Review

Traditional Sun Style Taijiquan (Saddleback College-CPS7)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been studying the Sun-style of taijiquan for about a decade and have had a chance to meet one of the co-authors of this book. Tim Cartmell, at a weekend workshop of the solo form covered in this book. Tim is that rarity... a martial practitioner who teaches as well as he performs and who writes as well as he teaches.
You can't learn a form of movement by reading a book, no matter how competent the written and photographic content; but a beginner can certainly get a very good idea of what the Sun-style solo form is about as well as the potential benefit of studying its health aspect. Furthermore, anyone who has experienced that style of taijiquan from a teacher will, without a doubt, get new insights into it.
My one complaint, as a martial artist, is that the combative applications of the various postures are not illustrated in any way; though some interesting two-person postural testing methods are described in detail. But, the book really isn't about the combative side of that style so I shouldn't have been surprised!
An excellent book by an excellent teacher...

The Feldenkrais Method: Teaching by Handling Review

The Feldenkrais Method: Teaching by Handling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Feldenkrais method is an amazing method of retraining the body. It can cure chronic muscular or joint pain, repetitive stress injuries (this was why I was led to it), or just cause you to have a more supple, stronger body ---all with no exercise or painful stretches. This book is not an introduction to that method---the book by Moshe Feldenkrais called "Awareness through Movement" is the standard introduction. Or do a google search for "Feldenkrais FAQ". In fact, a book will rarely do justice to the method and the best introduction would be to take lessons from a good teacher.
But if you get intrigued about the method and begin to wonder about its technical details, this book is perhaps the most accessible account.
Rywerant was one of Feldenkrais's earliest students and is today in his 80s.

101 Workouts: Build Muscle, Lose Fat and Reach Your Fitness Goals Faster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I looked through this entire book while at a bookstore recently and it is better than average.
Pros:
-101 exercises
-FULL COLOR photos / high grade paper
-Fairly comprehendible
-Shows starting and ending positions on most exercises
Cons:
-Everyone in this book appears to be on steroids, this may be intimidating to new people
-The nutrition and supplement sections are severely lacking
-Not all the exercises have a starting and ending position. Someone new to working out would have a hell of a time figuring out how to properly do a cable crunch based on the description and one picture.
-Some of the descriptions are lacking a bit
In conclusion this is a good reference guide for a fitness enthusiast, but I wouldn't recommend this to someone without general knowledge. The full color photos make this stick out from other books and it's relatively small (so it's easy to take to the gym). I'll buy this when it goes down in price.

Breath: A Novel Review

Breath: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Australian writer Tim Winton's latest short novel (217 pages), unlike some of his previous novels--CLOUDSTREET and DIRT MUSIC come to mind-- is one that you can devour in one sitting for it will pull you down into it like the undertow that this fantastic writer writes about with such breathtaking beauty. We see the events unfold through the eyes of Bruce, now a gnarly-- one of Winton's favorite words-- paramedic in his 50's who recalls events that transpired when he was a budding teenager in the small town of Sawyer, Australia.
The novel begins with Bruce and a woman partner answering an emergency call from a distraught family whose teenaged son apparently has committed suicide by hanging. Then the narrator jumps back in time to his youth and talks for many pages about his friend Loonie and their strange relationship-- a sort of hero worship on the part of Bruce-- with an exotic former surfing champion Sando who pushes the boys to newer and more dangerous heights as they take on more and more difficult waves as they strive to rise from being just ordinary. Then there is Sando's American wife Eva.
BREATH is a strange novel indeed. If you are wondering what a teenager's suicide has to do with all this surfing on the Australia coast, as I was, just be patient for Mr. Winton ties up all the loose ends with a powerful wallop. The novel is a coming-of-age novel about sexual awakening, the danger associated with the emotions if they are left to run rampant when you are thirteen or fourteen, the scars that remain in adulthood.
I am always fascinated when writers from other parts of the world write about Americans. Eva tells Bruce what it was like growing up in Salt Lake City, Mormons and American ambition. "But the way Eva told it, her countrymen were restless, nomadic, clogging freeways and airports in their fevered search for action. She said they were driven by ambition in a way that no Australian could possibly understand. . . She made her own people sound vicious. Yet God was in everything - all the talk, all the music, even on their money. Ambition, she said. Aspiration and mortal anxiety." Mr. Winton has homed in admirably on the contemporary American psyche.
Tim Winton's language is always appropriate and often completely beautiful--from creating new verbs (rag-dolling) to describing surfing when Bruce contrasts the practicality of Sawyer's farmers, loggers and millers who "did solid, practical things" with the beauty and grace of surfers. "How strange it was to see men do something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant, as though nobody saw or cared." And he expresses his own feelings about surfing: "but for me there was still the outlaw feeling of doing something graceful, as if dancing on water was the best and bravest thing a man could do."
Tim Winton is one terrific writer.
