THE WIDENING CIRCLE: A Lyme Disease Pioneer Tells Her Story. By Polly Murray. St. Martin's Press, 321 pp., $23.95By Ann Hirschberg Infectious disease sleuths are supposed to be lab-coated AIDS researchers or Dustin Hoffman types in "hot zone" suits as seen in "Outbreak." A genteel, New England landscape painter and mother of four does not fit the picture. Yet this medical pioneer uncovered Lyme disease, the fastest growing infectious disease next to AIDS and the number one vector-borne disease in our country. The "Widening Circle" in Polly Murray's title refers not only to the expanding tell-tale rash which is the sure sign of Lyme disease, but to the research that has had to reach further and further to find the answers to this insidious tick-borne scourge. The "Circle" also encompasses the incredible numbers of medical professionals to whom Lyme disease sufferers are sent by uninformed doctors who can't or won't try to treat them. After an incredible range of symptoms and many hospital stays for pain and procedures for the whole Murray family, Polly was told the illness was "all in her head." Her doctor became furious when she approached the health department with her findings that not only her family, but a large cluster of people in her Lyme, Connecticut area were afflicted. He accused her of "stirring up trouble." Murray's intelligence and persistence led her to more research and finally to Yale University in 1975 where her findings were considered researchable by the doctors there. "They were spirited, like archaeologists who'd unearthed an intriguing artifact, some bit of pottery that promises even greater riches will surface with just a few more turns of the spade. "I certainly shared their enthusiasm. On the other hand, I'd been "in the field" for a while, and I knew it wasn't going to be easy to figure everything out so fast. Whatever this illness was, it was complicated, in that it involved so many systems of the body, and my instincts told me it was going to elude definition for some time to come." Twenty years later, the search should have come to a happy ending with the advance of medical technology and millions in grants for research. The definitive test for Lyme disease and the "magic bullet" treatment should have been discovered. Sadly, there is still no conclusive, reliable test for Lyme disease. Grants are sparse and the medical archeological "spades" are turning slowly. It is known that early treatment with antibiotics can arrest the disease. Left untreated, patients face the horrific sequalae Murray and her family still endure. Though the disease has been reported in all 50 states, most doctors are not well informed and many are still saying," You can't have that in Ohio" and "There has never been a case reported here." The Ohio Department of Health Vector-borne Disease Unit figures stand at close to 500 reported cases. Though many doctors are not reporting cases (too much paperwork), the Centers for Disease Control case numbers showed a 58% increase in the U.S. in 1994. Polly Murray's measured journey through this painful odyssey continues. Her tenacity and reasoned clarity shine through her writing. Along the way, you get to know her wonderful family, two of whom became doctors: a heroic accomplishment, all things considered. Murray continues the search for answers and has become not just a symbol, but a dedicated educator. She addresses medical professionals and researchers, including an appearance at Case Western Reserve Medical School in Cleveland, where one son was a student in 1989. "The Widening Circle" goes beyond a tale of medical sleuthing. Murray knows the patient's struggle with Lyme disease and the parent's anguish. This book has much well researched and first-hand information for physicians and patients. She examines the need for education, collaboration, and respect, and explains why these are required not only of researchers, but of physicians treating Lyme disease patients in order to deal with this puzzling affliction.

Bodybuilding 201: Everything You Need to Know to Take Your Body to the Next Level
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Read my other reviews of Dr. Wolff's books because I have read several of his books and I am proud to have them in my collection. Truthfully, they are all I need since they cover everything you need to know!
Bodybuilding 201 is meant to build on your current experience and results to take it further or get past your sticking points.
My advice for the new or experienced - start with BodyBuilding 101, then read his Book of Great Workouts, to get your base of knowledge. Then read this book while you are hitting the gym and getting amazing results.
Remeber, amazing results come slowly, over time. You cannot see that 1/4 inch of growth but it is there. Little by little it all adds up and before you know it, your a completely changed person!
Dr. Wolff teaches you how.
All of Dr. Wolff's books teach you technique, proper diet, and truly give you a solid education in all areas of working out - supplements, exercises, routines, fact and fiction.
My game plan for you- buy the 3 books I mentioned(and any others Dr. Wolff has written!!), read them in the order I described and start working out once your done. While your building your body over the next 6 months to a year, spend the time wisely by reading his other books and crafting your gameplan further. Don't rush into it. Just build your base slowly and after the proper amount of time has passed, try the next level of techniques.
Robert Wolff gives you proven and time tested material, coupled with his own personal experience. He goes over proper diet, proper technique and methodology to get you started off on the right foot. All of us are different and what works in the magazine interviews of the Pro bodybuilders probably will not work for you.
Did I mention that the author really will answer your e-mail questions!! Yes, I have had actually direct communication with him. He answered my questions and was more than happy to help!!!
Forget Atkins, South Beach, and all the other hype out there. Read and learn from Dr. Wolff.

Warrior Girls: Protecting Our Daughters Against the Injury Epidemic in Women's Sports Review

Warrior Girls: Protecting Our Daughters Against the Injury Epidemic in Women's Sports
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Girls are suffering ACL injuries (which can take as much as year to recover from) at an alarming rate in soccer games and similar sports. Sokolove reviews the evidene about these injuries and suggests valuable training reforms that might spare these girls from such devastating injuries. This is a "must read" for any dad or mom whose teenage daughter is in competitive soccer, basketball, lacrosse, or similar sport.

Amy Steadman was destined to become one of the great women's soccer players of her generation. "The best of the best," Parade magazine called her as she left high school and headed off to the University of North Carolina. Instead, by age twenty, Amy had undergone five surgeries on her right knee. She had to give up the sport she loved. She walked with a stiff gait, like an elderly woman, and found it painful to get out of bed in the morning. Warrior Girls exposes the downside of the women's sports revolution that has evolved since Title IX: an injury epidemic that is easily ignored because we worry that it will threaten our daughters' hard-won opportunities on the field. From teenage girls playing local soccer, basketball, lacrosse, volleyball, and other sports to women competing at the elite level, female athletes are suffering serious injuries at alarming rates. The numbers are frightening and irrefutable. Young female athletes tear their ACLs, the stabilizing ligament in the knee, at rates as high as eight times greater than their male counterparts. Women's collegiate soccer players suffer concussions at the same rate as college football players. From head to toe, female athletes suffer higher rates of injury, and many of them play through constant pain.Michael Sokolove gives us the most up-to-date research on girls and sports injuries. He takes us into the homes and hearts of female athletes, into operating theaters where orthopedic surgeons reconstruct shredded knees, and onto the practice field of famed University of North Carolina soccer coach Anson Dorrance. Exhaustively researched and strongly argued, Warrior Girls is an urgent wake-up call for parents and coaches. Sokolove connects the culture of youth sports -- the demands for girls to specialize in a single sport by age ten or younger, and to play it year-round -- directly to the injury epidemic. Devoted to the ideal of team, and deeply bonded with teammates, these tough girls don't want to leave the field even when confronted with serious injury and chronic pain.Warrior Girls shows how girls can train better and smarter to decrease their risks. It makes clear that parents must come together and demand changes to a sports culture that manufactures injuries. Well-documented, opinionated, and controversial, Warrior Girls shows that all girls can safeguard themselves on the field without sacrificing their hard-won right to be there.

Doom: Hell On Earth Review

Doom: Hell On Earth
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was the point where I started to question what the authors were doing. I love a good alien invasion story, but I found the Doom video games to be more interesting because they weren't exactly aliens; they were something much more frightening. The authors of this novel removed this aspect and tried to put their own spin on the story, thus hurting it. I also didn't find the new characters all that exciting, although I enjoyed the fact that it switched perspective while still remaining in the first person.

They were creatures seemingly spawned straight from the pits of Hell - demons, zombies, fire-breathing imps - all too horrifically close to the stuff of nightmare to be real. But they were. And on the inhospitable moons of Mars, Corporal Flynn 'Fly' Taggart, Earth's last line of defence against a seemingly inexhaustible supply of alien warriors, beat them back almost single-handedly. But Taggart discovers that the war had barely begun, for while he was fighting them on Mars, the hellish creatures had established a beachhead on Earth itself. Now, with the aid of a fourteen-year-old female computer genius, an unrepentantly Mormon sniper, and the best soldier in this woman's army, Fly Taggart must defeat the invaders, and their treacherous human allies, yet again.

My 15-month old daughter spends a bit of time almost daily with this book. She was about 10 months at the time we purchased it and fell in love right away. She loves to act out the movements and watch us as we do it. The rhymes are fun, and the perfect length to hold the attention of little ones. This is also a good one to act out in the car, as it takes no time to have it memorized.

Starting Strength (2nd edition) Review

Starting Strength (2nd edition)
Average Reviews:

I'd recommend this book for just about everybody who lifts weights. Beginners can greatly benefit from it to learn good form right off the bat. Experienced lifters might also want to check it out because, a) there's always more to learn, and b) your form might not be as good as you think it is.
So what's the book about anyway? Well, the Cliff Notes version is that its a book on how to lift weights PROPERLY using a barbell. A few details:
-the book spends a lot of time discussing the details of all the basic barbell exercises, such as the squat, the bench press, the deadlift, the press, and the power clean. As you might have guessed, the book devotes a whole chapter to each movement. For instance, the squat is discussed on pages 8-63, while the bench press is discussed on pages 66-102- I give you the page numbers to show you how in depth the book goes into each exercise
-you'll learn a lot of details that are often times neglected, such as grip, and the placement of other body parts that are indirectly used during an exercise. As an example, the book spends about 4 pages discussing foot placement during the bench press exercise.
-the book is filled with pictures and diagrams. In fact its hard to find a page that doesn't have one picture or diagram on it.
-the book does also cover "useful assistance exercies" as well, such as chin-ups, dips, rows, barbell curls, etc.
The book ends with a nice section that talks about a lot of "miscellaneous" things, things such as the order of doing exercises, warm-up sets, nutrition, soreness and injuries, etc. As you can see, this is a pretty detailed and comprehensive book, a book I think all weight lifters, beginners and experienced, will get a lot out of. Other weightlifting books of interest include Smokin' Hot Guns!!: How an Average Guy Can Get Big, Muscular Arms In One Workout A Week.

Stalking Yang Lu-chan Review

Stalking Yang Lu-chan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dense little book chock full of insights, training aids, kinematic concerns, visualization techniques, push hands insights, and more. Sifu Robin Johnson does a very good job of providing a syllabus of his training methods and insights from decades of study, practice, and teaching.
He breaks it down into 10 steps-- 10 key points that have helped him and his students. It's almost like a system. Each chapter covers a key point, and each chapter goes into considerable detail as to what he means, and different ways to implement the key point into your training. It's a good organizational tool
Pros: Densely packed with the above insights. Moreover, focuses on footwork, legwork, lower body alignment, sinking, placement and structure of legs and pelvis. Gives great visualization techniques to help with finding the right structure, and discusses in detail. In my experience, finding books that so extensively discuss the lower body in Tai Chi are rare to non-existent. And really, sometimes inch-by-inch discussions on placement of feet, weight-shifting, knee and pelvic alignment. Truly a joy.
Cons: Cheng Man-Ching filter. Cheng Man-Ching style was definitely the most popular in the USA early on, but it is being supplanted by traditional Yang style (which I study)-- and there are significant differences in the forms (even ignoring the difference in sequence). Especially a lot of the rear leg/knee alignment discussion needs to take this into consideration if your style is not Cheng Man-Ching. The later, upper body chapters are very form-specific, rather than generalized to Tai Chi collectively, and it takes some concentration to distill out concepts from his very specific examples. Furthermore, Sifu Johnson is not the clearest writer-- more because it seems like he forgets that he is writing through the Cheng Man-Ching filter. Finally, this is not a beginner's book. A working knowledge of Tai Chi, and a moderate amount of practice (at least a few years taking classes a couple times a week from a good teacher?) is, at least to me, mandatory in trying to understand where Sifu Johnson is coming from. Also, no helpful illustrations or pictures, and it definitely needs them.
Summary: Indispensible book. Has its limitations mostly due to the style-specifics and writing style, but it deals in a very frank, detailed way about issues that I believe come up in every Tai Chi practicioner's endeavor to become more skilled, and which are rarely treated with this much sincerity and rigor elsewhere.

404 Deskside Activities for Energetic Kids (SmartFun Activity Books) Review

404 Deskside Activities for Energetic Kids (SmartFun Activity Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Reviewed by Kam Aures for RebeccasReads (5/08)
In today's world children do not have as many opportunities for physical activity as they did in the past. Years ago children walked to and from school, whereas now times have changed and it may no longer be as safe for a child to do so by himself. Because of changes and circumstances in today's world limiting the amount of activity children can get, it is important to try to incorporate some sort of opportunity for physical movement into a child's daily routine. "404 Deskside Activities for Energetic Kids" is written to provide some ideas of just how to do that.
The book is geared toward teachers of children age 3 through 9 and is filled with tons of opportunities to create movement. Not only is movement important in a child's physical development but it also has positive effects on a child's social and cognitive development, as well as promotes creativity.
With each activity listed there are icons next to it that allow you to determine with a glance certain characteristics about the activity, such as targeted age, appropriate group size, whether or not the activity is advanced, if you need props or space, if physical contact is involved, and/or if you need to draw on skills that were previously taught in other activities. These icons are very helpful in sifting through the activities to find one that is appropriate to your situation.
The activities in the book range from the very basic to the advanced. At one end of the spectrum are "Arm Circles" and "Standing Star" which are movements that look exactly like their name implies. At the other end, one of the activities listed is called "Human Links: Division" and reads as follows, "Call out a number such as two. To answer, the students would link in groups of four and two, or six and three, etc., to show numbers that would divide to produce that answer."
"404 Deskside Activities for Energetic Kids" is a great book for both teachers and parents. My children had a fun time doing some of the activities in the book and every time that I am working at the computer they ask for a new one to do. With 404 activities listed I am going to be able to keep them busy for a very long time!

Stop Osteoarthritis Now: Halting the Baby Boomers' Disease Review

Stop Osteoarthritis Now: Halting the Baby Boomers' Disease
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Natural remedy greatly reduces pain associated with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. Books give insight into a natural remedy for arthritis pain--and it's free! Jacksonville, Florida, September 10, 1997: Baby boomers may think they can have it all. But as they age, they might get more than they bargained for, specifically, two debilitating forms of arthritis called osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. While many have turned to nutritional supplements for the "cure," these are not approved by the FDA and are not substantiated by clinical trials. "There is a natural remedy that many are unaware of," reported Harris H. McIlwain, MD, a Florida-based board certified rheumatologist and gerontologist and coauthor of Stop Osteoarthritis Now! Halting the Baby Boomer's Disease (Simon & Schuster Publishing) and The Fibromyalgia Handbook (Henry Holt and Company). The treatment? A combination of conditioning and strength-training moves that almost anyone can do. "Exercise is the easiest and most guaranteed way to ease pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia--the two most common forms of arthritis," McIlwain said. With increased years, the chances of getting osteoarthritis increases, as the body becomes less efficient at repairing itself. After age 50, 80 percent of America's population is affected to some degree with osteoarthritis, showing signs of pain and stiffness. Likewise, more than 10 million Americans have fibromyalgia, mostly women ages 40 to 55, which causes deep muscle pain, depression and fatigue. "Imagine what 50 years of use and 200 pounds of weight can do to your muscles and joints," McIlwain said. "But this exercise program will help to maintain a normal weight and keep aging muscles strong and joints lubricated. For fibromyalgia patients, exercise will reduce deep muscle pain, ease depression and promote healing sleep." McIlwain believes in this treatment so strongly that he developed a step-by-step treatment and prevention plan for his patients. The activity-based program he promotes helps to stop these forms of arthritis and gives patients a higher quality of life. "I even see elderly patients who, by staying on this exercise and strength-training program, are able to feel great improvement with reduced pain in just a few weeks," McIlwain contended. "Many have delayed or prevented worsening of arthritis with this plan." Helping the body heal itself with exercise is fully described in McIlwain's latest books, Stop Osteoarthritis Now! Halting the Baby Boomer's Disease and The Fibromyalgia Handbook, as well as in his Winning Series--Winning with Back Pain, Winning with Arthritis, and Winning with Osteoporosis (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.). Winning with Back Pain and Winning with Arthritis. All are now available at major booksellers.
