(More customer reviews)Knee Deep in the Funk is an important and needed book. It is the first book I've read that seriously addresses the connection between spirituality and music. And it does it without being flakey or new age.
The book is chockfull of insights and new ways of looking at seemingly obvious ideas. For example:
- Your sex drive is spiritual: the book destroys a major misconception - sex isn't dirty or anti-spiritual, your sex drives is a physical manifestation of your longing for God.
- Intuition and the experience of groove: Feeling a groove is similar to riding a bike. It is something you experience but can't explain. But when you get it, you know it.
- Music is a universal language: you can communicate, understand, and feel the needs of another person through music. You might be from a different country, generation, culture, religion, or whatever - music transcends those limitations. You can say something and I can understand you.
- Spirituality is a relationship: a spiritual experience isn't hocus-pocus; it tickles the same pleasure sensors as a relationship. Feeling a spiritual connection is no different than feeling a connection to someone you love. And music is a tool to communicate and bring you together.
Gluckin is great writer. He has a laid-back but very engaging style. The book is personal, anecdotal, funny, and not threatening. The writing style is direct at times. But I appreciated that.
The book moves as well. Big points and tangents are saved for the endnotes. And there is a lot of great stuff there as well.
Read it and dig it.
