I rented one of these from a medical supply store near my home for $180 for a month. I was on crutches for 6 weeks, then walking in a aircast for 4 weeks but was told I have to go back to crutches for another 4 weeks. I couldnt cope with not having use of my hands and the fatigue from crutch walking so I rented one of these.
On the first day my "bad" leg is sore in the thigh, since you are resting your weight on your knee/thigh which in my case is atrophied after so much disuse. I wish I had known about this for the first 6 weeks of my injury, though since getting around is much easier. The wheels glide well on my carpet and the knee rest is comfortable, since mine is a rental though the knee pads are worn, so could be more cushy. The brake is more like a "slow down" helper rather than a true break. I would have to say it is easier to propel yourself on this than on crutches but it isn't completely a free ride. You do have to use core muscles, leg muscles and energy to push yourself on this. I wouldnt recommend it to someone very elderly or very obese since they would probably do better with something motorized.
I think it is worth the money and great for people who cant or dont want to use crutches. You will get some funny stares but just think at least I am not on crutches!
