Treatment of Cerebral Palsy and Motor Delay Review

Treatment of Cerebral Palsy and Motor Delay

The fifth edition of Sophie Levitt's book "Treatment of Cerebral Palsy and Motor Delay" belongs on the book shelves of every Cerebral Palsy Treatment Centre, or Child Development Centre. Ms. Levitt has created a book which incorporates both solid treatment suggestions and current principles of family centered care, cultural sensitivity and close inter-professional collaboration. Throughout the book there is emphasis on respect for the goals and priorities of the family and the child with CP, and the importance of blending therapy with play. The child is not seen as a passive recipient of treatment, but an active participant.
This book includes an up to date chapter on evidence based practice, which can assist the clinician in the evaluation of research studies and the development of research protocols. A practical approach to assessment describes observational assessment as well as many standardized assessment tools, their specific purpose, and application in the development of treatment plans.
But it is the wealth of specific treatment suggestions and activities based on Ms. Levitt's extensive experience and her collaboration with expert clinicians from around the world which sets this book apart. Activities which are organized according to the starting positions and motor development of the child are well described. There is also information on how to choose and employ equipment, and on how to manage deformity.
The chapters in this book are well laid out, and the book will be very useful for students and new practitioners, as well as providing an update for experienced physical and occupational therapists.

This is a very good book for anyone interested in Quigong. This book is very well written in plain and easy to understand language. The divisions in the book are natural and allow you to progress at your leisure. The illustrations are very clear and go hand in hand with the instructions. Ballet Beginnings for Children: Pre-School Movement Fundamentals for Ages 3 and 4 (Bk. 1) Review

Ballet Beginnings for Children: Pre-School Movement Fundamentals for Ages 3 and 4 (Bk. 1)

I have been using this book for a little over a year in my pre-ballet classes and I have found it quite helpful for planning classes, building coordination, strength, and flexibility, and for introducing young children to the concepts of ballet. One of my classes comprises 4- and 5-year-olds (some were 3 when the class began), and the other class has kindergarten and first-graders, but I have found that the material is just as useful in the older group, perhaps more so, since they grasp the material more quickly. Personally I think it's a little weird to have a man's voice singing about flowers and bunnies in classes that consist of girls only (at least for me), but the girls love the music and I let them sing along as they do the exercises.
The book is very thorough in introducing teaching methods for young children, the components of a pre-ballet class, common mistakes to watch out for, step progressions, and creative ideas to make the classes more fun and interesting. The book is intended to be a complete curriculum and can be used as such. I do not use all of the material or use it exclusively, but it would be easy to do so.
I gave the book four stars instead of five for three reasons. First, some of the exercises as given are a little beyond a 3- or 4-year-old's ability in terms of tempo and combinations of steps. I have modified a few of the exercises (moreso the centre floor exercises than the warm-up) to make them more appropriate for my students. I also have not been able to introduce all the exercises given in a single year for a class that meets once a week for 45 minutes or an hour.
Secondly, many or even most of the centre and allegro exercises are just too fast, regardless of age group. My firm belief is that movements should be learned and mastered at a slow tempo before they are done fast, and the exercises as written in this book often give absurdly fast timing, which in my experience, inevitably leads to the children just plain running or falling down and hurting themselves. So I do some of the steps at half-tempo where that is the case.
The third reason for the 4-star rating is terminology. A few of the songs use terms that I do not use in my classes, such as coupé and passé which, although used commonly in the US, are misnomers for sur le cou-de-pied and retiré, and I am particular about using the proper terms in my classes, so I just don't use one or two of the songs. I also don't use the port de bras music because it gives first through fifth positions of the arms (which can apply to either the Cecchetti or French school), and I teach the Vaganova method which only has three arm positions; another studio where I teach pre-ballet uses the French terms for the arms (en bas, en avant, en haut, etc.) so I don't use the song for that class either, but someone who uses the French or Italian port de bras won't have that issue.
Overall I think this is a really useful book, especially for beginning teachers or teachers with little experience teaching young children, because you can follow the material to the letter and have a whole year's curriculum laid out, or you can just pick and choose exercises and use the book and CDs as inspiration for your own ideas. Either way I recommend it.

Kinesiology Laboratory Manual Review

Kinesiology Laboratory Manual
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One should know that this review is by one of the authors of this lab manual.
What is unique about this lab manual is that it is based upon the National Standards for Teaching Biomechanics (which are printed in the Appendix of the book). This is very helpful to those who are assigned to teach Kinesiology/Biomechanics courses who may have had only minimal post-graduate training in this area, yet are assigned to teach the course.
As well, there is an instructors manual which has "suggested answers" for each exercise in the manual as well as pedagogical suggestions about how each lab might best be approached to get the most out of it for your students. It is a very practical instructor's manual rather than the traditional chapter outline with test questions. Students are given the test questions in their lab manual with an answer key in the appendix.
Labs are very flexible and can be extended or shortened to meet any curricular/lesson goal(s).
There is an extensive use of internet referencing and suggestions.
There is an extensive list of resources for equipment and software that is appropriate for a teaching lab and learning experiences in the appendix which could be extremely useful to the Kinesiology/biomechanics course instructor.
The author also suggests seeing several of the unique products available for teaching at www.denoyer.com for teaching kinesiology/biomechanics (the author of this lab manual was the creator of "Plane Jane" their current featured product).

Once again a usable and sensible composite of the "world of water". All the basics have been incorporated into 134 pages to get you started in water workouts or keep you going. I teach Water Aerobics and P.E. Aquatic Methods courses at the University of Alaska, Anchorage (UAA) and utilized it as a text for my Spring 2001 400 level P.E. classes, along with the more detailed version - "The Complete Reference Guide for Aquatic Fitness Professionals". It's a compact and convenient reference and educational guide. Years of professional experience and research shine bright! Thanks Ruth, you are my mentor and "aqua authority", can't wait to see you again in Alaska. Melinda Post - Teacher - UAA and Board Member -Alaska's Allies in Fitness
